Frequently Asked Questions

Getting started in Banbury

Where can I learn Taekwondo in Banbury?

Banbury TAGB Taekwondo trains at Spiceball Leisure Centre, Cherwell Drive, Banbury, OX16 2BW. We welcome children, adults and families.

When are the Banbury Taekwondo classes?

We train on Sundays and Tuesdays. Sunday beginners (white to yellow belts): 4.30–5.30pm; intermediates (green tags to blue tags): 5–6pm; advanced students (blue belts and above): 6–7pm. Tuesday beginners (white belts to blue tags): 5.30–6.30pm; blue belts and above: 6.30–7.30pm. Check the Calendar for changes.

What age can children start Taekwondo?

Usually around four or five, but every child is different. Some four-year-olds are ready, while some older children need a little longer to develop their concentration. Our three free trial sessions let you see how your child gets on.

Can adults start Taekwondo with no previous experience?

Yes. You do not need a martial arts background to join our beginners’ classes. We introduce the skills step by step, so you can learn at a pace appropriate to you.

Can parents and children train together?

Yes—parents and children can train together in any class suitable for their grades. It is a lovely way to learn something new and spend active time together.

Your first lessons

Can I try a class before joining?

Yes. Your first three lessons are free taster sessions, with no commitment. They give you a chance to meet us, try the training and decide whether Taekwondo is right for you.

How much do Taekwondo lessons cost?

For one lesson a week, monthly fees are £24 for under-10s, £27.50 for ages 10–15 and £30 for adults aged 16+. Unlimited training is £36, £40 and £45 respectively. Household discounts are available when paying by monthly standing order: the most expensive student pays full price and subsequent household members receive 50% off. Household caps are £55 a month for once-weekly training and £75 for unlimited training. See Fees for current details; uniform, licensing and grading costs are separate.

What should I wear and bring to my first lesson?

Wear comfortable clothes that let you move freely, such as a T-shirt and jogging bottoms, and bring a drink of water. We train in bare feet. You do not need to buy a uniform for your trial. Remove jewellery before training, and let your instructor know about anything that may affect your participation.

Do I need to be fit or flexible before starting?

No. You can build fitness and flexibility through regular training—you do not need to arrive able to do the splits! We introduce exercises gradually and encourage you to work at an appropriate level.

Is Taekwondo suitable for someone who lacks confidence?

Taekwondo can be a great way to build confidence through learning new skills and working towards achievable goals. Everyone starts somewhere, and we encourage students as they develop at their own pace.

Training that suits you

Can you accommodate students with disabilities or additional needs?

Yes—we welcome children and adults with additional needs. We’d welcome a chat about any support you or your child might need and which class would suit you best. Our three free trial sessions give everyone a chance to see how they get on.

What is TAGB Taekwondo, and how does it differ from other martial arts?

Taekwondo is a Korean martial art known for its kicking techniques. Our training also includes hand techniques, patterns, sparring and theory. TAGB stands for the Taekwondo Association of Great Britain, the association our club belongs to. Different martial arts and Taekwondo organisations use different syllabuses and competition rules.

Will I have to spar or take part in competitions?

Competitions are optional. Sparring is introduced gradually, starting with games and learning control, before developing into practice with a partner. From blue belt upwards, sparring is a required part of training.

Who teaches the Banbury classes?

Our classes are taught by experienced black belt instructors, led by Mr Robson. Visit the Instructors page to meet the team and find out about their experience.

Can I join if I have trained in Taekwondo or another martial art before?

Yes. We will assess your previous experience, current ability and how long a break you have had, then place you at an appropriate level. Bring details of your previous training so we can help you settle into the right class.

Belts, equipment and practical details

How do belt gradings work, and how often can I grade?

Gradings assess the skills and knowledge for your next belt. We hold around three or four a year. Students can grade at three-month intervals up to blue belt, then at six-month intervals, provided they are ready. Adults often progress more quickly than children; your instructor will guide you.

How long does it take to earn a black belt?

The minimum is three and a half years, although most students take longer. Progress depends on regular training, practice and individual readiness. It is a personal journey, rather than a race.

What uniform and equipment will I need, and when?

You can try the classes before buying a uniform. Your instructor will explain which dobok (Taekwondo suit) is suitable and when you need equipment such as sparring protection. Please ask before buying: training and grading equipment must meet the club’s requirements. See Uniform for options and ordering.

Where can I park for classes at Spiceball Leisure Centre?

Parking at Spiceball is limited. Other nearby options include Castle Quay North 2, Riverside Vehicle Park, Compton Road, The Mill and Chamberlain Court. Check the signs, charges and restrictions when you park. The Lidl car park is for Lidl customers only.

How do I book my free trial?
